Dual Actuator Mach 2 Hard Disk Drives
The hard disk drives head actuator is the component that moves its read/write heads to settle precisely over pre-formatted data tracks. A hard disk platter surface can have circa 100,000 tracks and a hard drive assembly can contain a number of platters with an arm for each platter.
Hard Disk Drives on to-days market have a single actuator with multiple read/write heads that settle over one fixed vertical co-ordinate and the same number of limited tracks. i.e. 2 platters = 4 recording tracks at any moment in time.
Seagate Mach 2 hard disk drive has two independently controlled actuators. These two actuators work in parallel doubling input output capability with a demonstrated eye watering throughput of 480MB/s. Mach 2 will have standard interfaces and present as two separate hard drives to the OS. Seagate hopes this technology will create a new tier of performance available to developers . The hard drives will debut in 2019 and coupled with “HAMR” technology this hard disk drive product package will go a long way to satisfy data storage and processing performance demand over the next 5 years.
