WD MyPassport Beeping

Data Recovery Industry Insider

WD My Passport Beeping

“I had knocked my Western Digital my passport external hard drive off the kitchen table.

When I reconnect the drive to my laptop computer it now makes three beeping sounds then after a short pause of  a couple of seconds, makes a further three beeps and stops. as well the hard disk drive does not appear as connected to the system i.e It is not recognized by the computer.

I looked for damage to the USB connector and swapped the leads for another set but the symptoms remained the same. I removed the external casing and disconnected the 640Gbyte Western Digital Scorpio Blue (WD Scorpio Blue ) I found inside and mounted this hard disk drive in a HDD docking station. I then connected the docking station to my home PC and putting my hand on the drive I could feel that the spindle motor engaged and the drive was spinning during the beeping interval.

“Most accounts on tech chat are that the drive read write heads are now damaged. “

Drive Repair and Data Recovery

The hard drive needs to be disassembled in a clean air environment by a skilled technician. The faulty read write head assembly removed and replaced with a working assembly. The hard drive reassembled, tested and the stored data transferred to a new external drive of suitable capacity.
